Thinking of exploring Tasmania with your family? This beautiful Australian island is packed with epic nature, cute animals, goegous beaches, great food and wide-open roads—perfect for a self-drive holiday with kids.

But, How much does a trip to Tasmania from India cost?
In this guide, we break down all the major expenses—flights, accommodation, food, car rental, and activities—and share our top tips to help you plan your Tasmania trip on a family-friendly budget.
1. Flight Costs from India to Tasmania
You'll first fly into Melbourne or Sydney, then take a domestic flight to Hobart or Launceston. While Delhi has a direct flight to Melbourne, most other Indian cities route through Singapore or Kuala Lumpur to reach Melbourne or Sydney.
There are some full-service airlines like Singapore Airlines, Air India, Malaysia Airlines, and Qantas that fly to these cities in Australia from several Indian metros. If you're on a budget, there are also low-cost carriers like AirAsia and Scoot that can take you to Australia for nearly half the price. However, onboard entertainment, meals, and checked baggage usually come at an additional cost with budget airlines.
Full-Service Airlines vs Budget Airlines: What’s the Difference?
Feature | Full-Service Airlines | Budget Airlines |
Examples | Singapore Airlines, Air India, Qantas, Malaysia Airlines | Scoot, AirAsia, Jetstar |
Ticket Price | Higher (₹65,000–₹90,000 round trip) | Lower (₹35,000–₹60,000 round trip) |
Checked Baggage | Usually included (20–30 kg) | Often not included; needs to be added at extra cost |
In-flight Meals | Included | Chargeable add-on |
Entertainment | Onboard screens or Wi-Fi | Usually not available or requires payment |
Seat Comfort | More legroom, better recline | Compact seating |
Ideal For | Families, long-haul comfort, less travel stress | Budget travellers, short stopovers, light packers |
Recommended When | Flight is 5+ hours or traveling with kids | Shorter flights or solo travellers on a budget |
Australia to Tasmania (one-way): ₹7,000 – ₹15,000 per person - Virgin Australia and Jetstar

Tips to Save Money on Flights:
Set flight alerts and check Skyscanner or Google Flights for off-season deals.
Flying via Southeast Asia (especially with Scoot or AirAsia) can sometimes be cheaper.
Sign up for the airline’s frequent flyer program—you can earn points redeemable on future journeys.
Always book directly on the airline’s website. Read the cancellation policy in detail to avoid any losses due to last-minute changes.

2. Accommodation: From Farmstays to Airbnb
Tasmania has plenty of family-friendly stays—from cozy cabins and beachside Airbnbs to farmstays where kids can feed animals and run wild. The best part? There are options to suit every budget.
Let me tell you a secret—the Airbnbs in Tasmania were some of the best we’ve ever stayed in! Most had toys, books, games for kids, and thoughtful touches like breakfast starters, pantry staples, and incredibly warm hosts who made us feel right at home.
We’ve handpicked some of our favourite places across the island after our 2-week road trip.

Here’s a general idea of what to budget per night for a family stay in Tasmania:
Budget hotels : ₹3,000–₹6,000 per night
Mid-range hotels and Airbnbs: ₹6,000–₹10,000 per night
Farm stays / Unique stays: ₹6,000–₹12,000 per night
Tips to Save Money on Accommodation:
Book early—especially if you're travelling during school holidays or peak season.
Compare prices across Airbnb and property websites to find the best value.
Read reviews carefully! place should be clean, safe and family friendly.
Check amenities like kitchen, washing machine, heating, Wi-Fi, and child-safe features.
Choose stays with free parking and kitchen access—you'll save on food and parking , especially in city like Hobart, where parking is not usually free even in hotels .
3. Getting Around: Why Renting a Car is Best
Public transport is limited outside major towns in Tasmania, which makes renting a car the best way to explore the island—especially if you're travelling with kids.
Having your own vehicle gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, stop at scenic lookouts, and access remote areas that public transport doesn’t reach. It's also perfect for family travel—kids can nap in the car during longer drives, and you can plan breaks, snack stops, or detours around their routine instead of being tied to a timetable.

For a family of 2 adults and 2 kids, you’ll likely need a sedan or compact SUV with enough space for luggage, car seats, and comfort on long drives.
Car rental (sedan or compact SUV): ₹2,500 – ₹5,000 per day
Fuel for a 10–14 day road trip: ₹8,000 – ₹10,000
Most rental companies offer automatic cars with GPS and child seat add-ons (for an extra charge), and you'll find major providers like Europcar, Hertz, Budget, and smaller local companies at Hobart and Launceston airports.
We booked directly with Eastcoast car rentals and had a good experience with them!
Tips to Save Money on Transport:
Book early – Car rentals can sell out fast in peak season. Early bookings usually get better rates.
Take full insurance – Get comprehensive insurance directly from the rental company to avoid high excess fees if anything goes wrong.
Plan a round trip – Try to keep your pick-up and drop-off location the same. One-way rentals often come with extra fees, so planning your itinerary in a full loop can save money.
Rent a campervan – It’s a fun way to combine your stay and transport, and it can lower your total trip cost.
4. Food: Eating Well Without Overspending
Expect to pay around ₹800 – ₹1,200 per person for a casual café meal. To keep your budget in check, we recommend a mix of eating out and cooking—cook simple breakfasts and dinners, and enjoy lunch at local cafés or picnic spots.
Weekly groceries should cost under ₹5,000 for a family of four, especially if you're shopping smart.
Tips to Save Money on Food:
Coles is cheaper than Woolworths for most staples.
Coles and IGA offer a good variety of ready-to-eat meals—great for busy travel days when you don’t feel like cooking.
Buy seasonal fruits like strawberries, apples, and grapes directly from local farms when possible. They're fresher, cheaper, and delicious.
Stock up on drinking water—some areas in Tasmania may not have potable tap water.
Don’t miss the local bakeries! They’re a Tasmanian highlight, especially for pies and sweet treats that make perfect road trip snacks.

5. Activities: Nature is (Mostly) Free!
The best thing about Tasmania? So many incredible experiences are completely free. From spotting wallabies in the wild, dolphins at Binalong Bay, to watching penguins at Low Head Lighthouse or Bruny Island—you don't always need to spend money to make unforgettable family memories.
That said, if you're planning to explore Tasmania's national parks—like Cradle Mountain or Freycinet National Park—you’ll need to purchase a Parks Pass. We highly recommend it.
We opted for the 60-day Holiday Pass, which cost AUD 93 for a family of four. It gave us access to multiple national parks across Tasmania and was totally worth it.
