Day 1: Pinnawala Elephant Experience & Kandy
Day 1 is all about introducing kids to Sri Lanka’s wildlife and culture. Start with a visit to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage or the Millennium Elephant Foundation. Having visited both on our two trips to Sri Lanka, we recommend Pinnawala for families, as the elephants have a larger area to roam, making the experience feel more ethical and natural.
Watching a herd of elephants by the river is a truly special sight. Kids can also feed elephants fruits at both places (for a fee). One of the most memorable moments is the walk from the orphanage to the riverbank, where dozens of elephants walk together through the village — an experience that’s hard to forget.
After Pinnawala, drive to Kandy. Visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic, one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the world. End the day with a relaxed walk around Kandy Lake and some souvenir shopping in the local markets.
Stay: Kandy

Day 2: Sigiriya & Dambulla Day Trip
Start early for your drive to Sigiriya, one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks. The Sigiriya Lion Rock hike is challenging but manageable for older kids, with plenty of stops and incredible views at the top. The ancient frescoes, lion paws, and fortress ruins make history come alive.
On the way back, stop at the Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with stunning Buddha statues and cave murals. This day beautifully combines adventure and ancient culture.
Return to Kandy for the night, keeping your base comfortable without changing hotels.
Stay: Kandy

Day 3: Scenic Drive to Nuwara Eliya
Today’s drive from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya is one of the most scenic in Sri Lanka. Break the journey with stops at Ramboda Falls and a visit to the Blue Fields Tea Factory, where kids can see how tea is made.
For families interested in the Ramayana trail, stop at Hanuman Kovil and later visit the Seetha Amman Temple, believed to be linked to the Ramayana legends. Wrap up the day with a peaceful stroll or boat ride at Gregory Lake.
Stay: Nuwara Eliya

Day 4: Horton Plains, Farms & Strawberries
Start very early for Horton Plains National Park, as mornings offer the best weather and visibility. The World’s End hike and circuit loop is one of Sri Lanka’s most rewarding walks, with dramatic cliffs and sweeping views. While long, it’s doable with school-age children who enjoy walking.
Later in the day, visit Ambewela Farms, often called Sri Lanka’s “Little New Zealand,” where kids can see cows and enjoy fresh dairy products. End the day with a stop at a local strawberry farm, a fun and relaxing experience for children.
Stay: Nuwara Eliya

Day 5: From Hills to Beaches – Nuwara Eliya to Mirissa
Today you travel from the cool hill country to the warm southern coast. Drive via Ella, soaking in lush landscapes, and stop at Ravana Falls, a dramatic waterfall linked to Ramayana folklore.
By afternoon, arrive in Mirissa and spend the rest of the day relaxing on Mirissa Beach. The gentle waves, soft sand, and laid-back vibe make it perfect for families.
Stay: Mirissa

Day 6: Whale Watching & Galle
An early morning whale watching tour from Mirissa is a highlight for many families, offering a chance to spot blue whales and dolphins (seasonal and weather-dependent).
Later, drive to Galle and explore the charming Galle Fort, with its cobbled streets, historic lighthouse, and ocean views. Kids love wandering through the fort walls and spotting little cafes and shops.
Return to Mirissa or stay near Galle depending on your onward travel plans.
Stay: Mirissa / Galle

Day 7: Turtle Hatchery & Departure
On your final day, stop at a turtle hatchery along the southern coast, where kids can learn about turtle conservation and see baby turtles up close.
After this gentle end to the trip, drive to the airport and fly back home with memories of wildlife encounters, scenic hikes, ancient temples, and beach time — the perfect mix for a family trip to Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka truly surprised us in the best way. From watching elephants by the river and climbing Sigiriya Rock to hiking at Horton Plains and relaxing on the beaches of Mirissa, this island offers an incredible mix of culture, nature, wildlife, and adventure — all within easy driving distances. If you’re planning Sri Lanka with kids, this 7-day family itinerary strikes the perfect balance between exploration and downtime. We would happily return again!
