What to Expect on a Whale Watching Tour in Mirissa

We booked our Whale watching trip online. After our booking was confirmed, we were informed that we would be picked up from our hotel at around 5 AM, with the pick up charges included in the total price.The trip starts at sunrise, around 6 AM, but you need to report to the office at around 5:30 AM.

At the office, once the formalities are done, you take a short walk to the harbor to board the boat. It's a double-decker boat with a toilet and decent seating arrangements. We suggest sitting on the top floor for a better view.


When you board, the crew provides life jackets and motion sickness medicine that you can take in case you feel sick during the initial rough ride into the sea.


After a briefing about safety, the whales and their habitat, and what to expect from the trip, they provide a delicious breakfast of a fruit platter and eggs made to order with some bread.

Spotting Blue Whales, Dolphins, Turtles, and More

About an hour and a half into the trip, the spotting begins. Raja and the whales, do not take the boats very near to the whales when they are spotted, so as to not disturb the majestic creature. Not just blue whales, but there's a good chance to see dolphins and turtles too.

Usually, the trip lasts about 6 to 7 hours, making it a great half-day adventure.

  • They provide life jackets for toddlers too.

  • The ride can get very rough, so plan accordingly.

  • Bring plenty of fluids and snacks for toddlers.

  • Dress kids in comfortable clothes and carry a sweatshirt in case it gets windy and cool. A spare set of clothes is always a good idea.

  • Don't forget to carry sunscreen.
