3. Norwegian mountaineering centre
We didn't get inside the Norwegian Mountaineering Centre (Norsk Tindesenter) ourselves, but it's worth knowing about if you're planning your visit, especially on a rainy day. The centre traces the history of Norwegian mountaineering back to the first ascent of Romsdalshorn in 1828, with a 15-minute multimedia film projected onto a 3D rock-wall screen, plus Norway's highest indoor climbing wall for kids and adults of any skill level. There's also a café with fjord and mountain views if you need a break. Entry runs around NOK 145 for adults and NOK 345 for a family ticket (kids under 18), with children under 4 free (worth checking the official site for current hours and prices before you go).
4. Åndalsnes Town
Stroll through Åndalsnes town, a charming harbor town with a small playground, a car park, and the train station right across the street. You'll find several restaurants and small souvenir shops nearby. Plan to visit before noon to beat the crowds. Note that parking within the town centre is paid.

Pause by the tranquil Rauma river. Perfect for a slow afternoon with young kids or a break between sightseeing stops. Bring a picnic and let the kids skip stones by the water.

It takes about an hour to reach the top, driving through hairpin bends and past cascading waterfalls—it's a must-do experience in Norway. We visited in late May and found it was still closed for the season, so we only drove to the base to get a glimpse before heading back. Always check road status before you plan your visit, since these mountain roads can close on short notice, especially during shoulder season (spring and early summer).
8. Trollstigen Camping & Troll Ice
Trollstigen Camping is a great spot to stay close to the base of Trollstigen, with a good playground for younger kids. It's also the place to try Troll Ice (a local ice-cream treat), while the kids enjoy the playground. If you're travelling with kids, it's worth watching the Norwegian movie Troll before your trip. We watched it one evening in Stryn, and our daughter loved it.
