We have included prices in INR, vegetarian food notes where relevant, and honest tips that no generic travel guide will give you. New Zealand is one of the most family-friendly destinations we have travelled to and the North Island in particular offers an extraordinary range of experiences for kids of all ages.

Best Things to Do in Coromandel Peninsula with Kids
The Coromandel Peninsula is one of the most rewarding regions for families on a North Island New Zealand road trip. A two to three day base here gives you beaches, native forest walks, geothermal experiences and some of the most memorable farm stays in New Zealand. Here are the best things to do in Coromandel with kids:
1. Cathedral Cove, Hahei — Must Do (FREE walk)
Cathedral Cove is an absolute must-do on the Coromandel Peninsula and one of the most iconic natural landmarks on the entire North Island of New Zealand. The walk through coastal forest takes 45 minutes to an hour each way and the views are stunning throughout — but nothing prepares you for stepping through that enormous limestone arch onto the beach below. It is breathtaking and one of the best things to do in North Island New Zealand with kids, full stop.
Parking options :
Grange Road private parking — NZD 20 (approx INR 1,100), short walk to the trail head. This is what we did.
Hahei car park (free) + Park and Ride shuttle — NZD 8 per person return (approx INR 440)
Water taxi from Hahei beach — NZD 40 per person one way (approx INR 2,200) — a fun option for tired kids on the return
Family tips: The last stretch involves stairs — not suitable for strollers. Be careful around the limestone formations which are slippery when wet. Suitable for kids who can manage 45 minutes of moderate walking. Don't miss the small ice cream shop on the trail on your way back — a very well-earned treat. Our girls still talk about this walk.

2. Hot Water Beach — Single Best Experience in Coromandel (FREE · Low tide only)
Hot Water Beach is the single best thing to do in Coromandel with kids — and possibly one of the most unique beach experiences in all of New Zealand. At low tide, geothermal water seeps up through the sand and you can dig your own hot pool right on the beach and sit in it with the ocean in front of you. It sounds gimmicky, it is absolutely not. It is magical and our kids were completely spellbound.
Critical planning tip for families: This experience only works during the low tide window — typically 1 to 2 hours either side of low tide. Check the tide forecast online before you go at surf-forecast.com or tide-forecast.com and plan your visit around it. We arrived at 7am and had a perfect experience with no crowds. In summer this beach gets extremely busy — autumn visits are far more relaxed.
Carry a spade (hire one from the shop near the car park if you don't have one), sunscreen, water and a jacket. There is a large toilet and wash complex near the car park and several cafes.
For Indian families: plenty of vegetarian-friendly cafe options near the car park for breakfast or lunch.
3. Otama Beach — Hidden Gem (FREE)
A beautiful, secluded beach that feels like a secret — no crowds, just gorgeous unspoiled Coromandel coastline. The road from Kuaotunu to Otama is hilly and single-lane in places — an SUV is strongly recommended for this stretch. The drive itself through lush native forest is stunning and the beach at the end is completely worth it.
4. Kuaotunu Beach & Cafe — Scenic Stop (FREE beach · Paid cafe)
A lovely, unhurried stop on the Coromandel coast. Pretty beach, a good cafe for coffee, and a relaxed atmosphere that feels completely untouristy. The backdrop of the bay is spectacular — some of our favourite road trip photos came from here. Great for a stretch-and-coffee stop on the drive around the peninsula.

5. Waiau Falls & Kauri Grove, the 309 Road — Nature Walk with Kids (FREE)
The 309 Road is one of the great Coromandel hidden gems for families. It looks more like a gravel road and some sections are rough — SUV recommended — but the rewards are extraordinary.
Waiau Falls — a short, easy walk through native forest to a beautiful waterfall. Brilliant with young kids. The forest feels ancient and the walk is completely manageable even for small children.
Just a short distance away is the Kauri Grove — a walk through ancient kauri trees including the famous Siamese Kauri, two trees fused together that look like something from Avatar. It genuinely feels otherworldly. If your kids have seen Avatar, build this up beforehand — they will be mesmerised. This is one of the best free things to do in North Island New Zealand with kids that most families miss entirely.
Whiti Farm Park is also in this area and looks like a great family activity — we didn't have time but it's on our list for next time.
6. Kaimarama Farm Stay — Glowworms, Eels & Egg Collecting (Paid accommodation)
This earns its place on any list of the best things to do in Coromandel with kids. We booked a trailer stay on a working farm in Kaimarama and it became one of the most memorable experiences of our entire North Island road trip. The farm had cows, chickens, ducks, pukekos and lemon trees everywhere. Our girls collected fresh eggs from the hens with our incredibly warm hosts. We walked across the property to a river and watched sheep graze. In the evening our hosts took us to feed eels in the stream and then into the native forest after dark to find glowworms.
We skipped Waitomo Glowworm Caves having experienced Marakoopa Cave in Tasmania — and this farm stay glowworm walk was even more personal and memorable than a cave tour would have been. For families looking for an authentic New Zealand experience, a farm stay like Kaimarama is one of the best things to do in North Island New Zealand with kids, hands down.

Best Things to Do in Rotorua with Kids
Rotorua is one of the best destinations for families on a North Island New Zealand self-drive trip. The geothermal landscape is extraordinary, the family activities are varied and — crucially for budget-conscious Indian families — many of the best things to do in Rotorua with kids are completely free. Here is our honest guide to the best Rotorua family activities:
7. Blue Springs, Te Waihou Walkway — Stunning Natural Stop (FREE)
The Blue Springs at Te Waihou Walkway are one of the most visually stunning natural stops on the North Island — crystal clear water in a vivid, almost unreal blue that looks like something from a travel poster but is completely natural and unfiltered. Free parking and a lovely easy walk make this a no-brainer stop on the drive to Rotorua.
One honest note for families: Blue Springs has become very popular on Instagram recently and the day we visited it was extremely crowded — parking was overflowing. Go early in the morning to avoid the crowds. It is absolutely worth visiting, just time it right.

8. Hobbiton Movie Set, Matamata — For LOTR Fans (Paid — check current prices at hobbitontours.com)
We drove through Matamata — where Hobbiton is located — and the rolling green hills are extraordinary. You can see exactly why Peter Jackson chose it. We skipped the tour as our kids have not watched Lord of the Rings and it felt expensive for that reason, but if LOTR is important to your family, Hobbiton is considered one of the best movie set experiences in the world. Book well in advance as it sells out.
For Indian families: Hobbiton is located about 45 minutes from Rotorua and makes an easy detour on the drive in. Check current prices and booking at hobbitontours.com.
9. Centennial Park Rotorua — Autumn Colours Hidden Gem (FREE)
A hidden gem that most tourists miss entirely and one of the best free things to do in Rotorua with kids if you are visiting in autumn. Centennial Park in Rotorua has some of the most beautiful autumn colours we saw anywhere on the North Island — golden, amber and red foliage. The walk is short, well under a kilometre, but absolutely gorgeous. Free, quiet and perfect for a slow morning. Only relevant March to May — outside of autumn it is a pleasant but unremarkable park.
10. Kuirau Park Rotorua — Free Geothermal Experience & Playground (FREE)
One of the best free things to do in North Island New Zealand with kids, and one that most tourists skip in favour of paid geothermal parks. Kuirau Park is right in the heart of Rotorua city and combines a fantastic children's playground with active geothermal features — bubbling mud pools, steaming vents and the star attraction: free hot foot baths at the entrance where you soak your feet in geothermally heated water. We spent a very happy hour here and our girls absolutely loved the foot baths. Allow 1 to 2 hours. Good toilet complex on site.
For Indian families: completely free, central location, easy to combine with a cafe stop in town.
11. Skyline Luge & Sky Swing Rotorua — Best Paid Activity in Rotorua with Kids (Paid — NZD 225 / approx INR 12,375 for family of 4, 3 rides + gondola)
The undisputed highlight of Rotorua for families — and honestly for us adults too. The gondola takes you up the hill with sweeping views over Lake Rotorua, and then you luge down on gravity-powered karts on three tracks ranging from scenic to very fast. Our strong advice: book at least 3 rides each. The first run you are finding your feet; by the third you are properly flying and it is genuinely one of the most fun things we did on the entire North Island road trip.
The Sky Swing launches you out over the hillside — spectacular and not for the faint-hearted. The cafe and restaurant at the top has stunning Lake Rotorua views and is perfect for coffee, fries and ice cream. For Indian families: the cafe has vegetarian-friendly options. Book online in advance for better rates.
Other popular Rotorua activities we skipped having done similar things elsewhere:
Agrodome farm show — very popular with tourists
Hamurana Springs and Redwood Walk — beautiful native forest
OGO Zorbing — rolling downhill in a giant inflatable ball, very popular with kids

12. Waitomo Glowworm Caves — For Families Who Haven't Seen Glowworms (Paid — check waitomo.com)
We skipped Waitomo as we had done Marakoopa Cave in Tasmania and our Kaimarama farm stay gave us a more personal glowworm experience. But Waitomo is one of New Zealand's most iconic family experiences and if your family has never seen glowworms before, it is absolutely worth the detour — about 1.5 hours from Rotorua. The cave system is extraordinary and the glowworm boat tour is genuinely magical for kids. Book in advance at waitomo.com.
Best Things to Do in Taupo with Kids
Taupo is one of the most underrated family destinations on the North Island of New Zealand. Lake Taupo — the largest lake in New Zealand — sits in the middle of a volcanic plateau with extraordinary geothermal activity all around it, and the best things to do in Taupo with kids are almost entirely free. This region genuinely surprised us.
13. Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland (Paid — NZD 115 / approx INR 6,325 for family of 4)
One of the most visually extraordinary places on the entire North Island — the Champagne Pool, the Artist's Palette, the vivid coloured lakes — the colours are completely real and utterly otherworldly. One of the best paid things to do in North Island New Zealand with kids. Allow 2 to 3 hours to walk the full circuit.
On Lady Knox Geyser: Erupts daily at 10:15am — arrive by 10am for a good spot. It is spectacular but we want to be honest: Lady Knox is not a naturally erupting geyser. It is induced daily by adding a surfactant. Still worth seeing — just go in with the right expectations and you won't feel let down.
For Indian families: NZD 115 for a family of 4 (approx INR 6,325 at the April 2026 exchange rate of 1 NZD = INR 55).

14. Huka Falls, Taupo — Must Do Free Activity (FREE)
One of the most impressive waterfalls in New Zealand and completely free to visit — making it one of the best free things to do in Taupo with kids. The sheer volume and turquoise colour of the water thundering through the narrow gorge is mesmerising. Even kids who have seen many waterfalls will stop and stare. Short easy walk from the car park. Allow 30 to 45 minutes. Combine with nearby Hipapatua Reserve for a quiet, uncrowded nature stop.
15. Otumuheke Hot Stream, Spa Park Taupo — Best Free Experience in Taupo (FREE)
A naturally warm stream in a beautiful green park where you can simply wade in and soak for as long as you like — completely free. The geothermal water is naturally heated and the setting is gorgeous. We spent two very happy hours here and it was one of those experiences that costs nothing but absolutely stays with you. One of the best free things to do in North Island New Zealand and a genuine must-do in Taupo for families.

16. Whangamata Stream Walk to Kinloch Beach (FREE)
A 6km flat forest trail following the Whangamata Stream all the way to Kinloch Beach on Lake Taupo — one of the best family walks in the Taupo region. Go early when the forest is quiet and the light filters through the trees. Allow 2 to 3 hours return with kids. At Kinloch the general store has excellent hot food and there is a playground right on the beach. The lake views from Kinloch are stunning.
17. Taupo Playground & Lake Taupo Waterfront (FREE)
The Taupo playground is one of the best we found on the entire North Island road trip — our girls declared it a firm favourite and we visited twice. Combine with a walk along the beautiful Lake Taupo waterfront, especially at sunset when the sky turns extraordinary colours over the volcanic plateau. Completely free and one of the best free things to do in Taupo with young kids.
18. Red Rose Cottage, Marotiri — Horse Farm Stay (Paid accommodation)
A special mention for one of the best family accommodation experiences on our North Island trip. Red Rose Cottage in Marotiri near Taupo is a working horse farm where the hosts kept racehorses and pet ponies. Our host Stephie was wonderful — answered every question, let the girls hand-feed the horses and made us feel completely at home. A unique North Island family experience.

Best Things to Do in Ohakune & Tongariro National Park with Kids
The Ohakune and Tongariro National Park region is one of the most dramatically beautiful areas on the entire North Island. Snow-capped volcanoes, ancient lava fields, native forest and a completely charming small town — this area is hugely underrated for families and has some of the best things to do in North Island New Zealand with kids that most itineraries skip entirely.
19. Taranaki Falls Loop Walk, Whakapapa — Best Family Walk in Tongariro (FREE)
One of the absolute best things to do in North Island New Zealand with kids — a 6km loop through extraordinary volcanic landscape in Tongariro National Park. The trail winds through ancient lava flows, tussock grasslands and native forest before reaching Taranaki Falls, which drop dramatically over a lava cliff into a pool below. Mount Ruapehu towers in the background throughout. The Whakapapa visitor centre at the start is excellent and worth time in itself.
Allow 2 to 3 hours with kids. Completely free. One of the best free things to do in North Island New Zealand — full stop.
Note: This walk is in Tongariro National Park near Ohakune and is completely different from Mount Taranaki in New Plymouth.

20. Skywaka Gondola, Mount Ruapehu (Paid — NZD 157 / approx INR 8,635 for family of 4)
The Skywaka gondola takes you to the top of an active volcano — Mount Ruapehu, which last erupted in 1997. Even in late April with the ski season closed, there was significant snow at the summit. The combination of dark volcanic ash, brilliant white snow and clear blue sky was one of the most visually extraordinary things we experienced on the entire North Island trip. The drive up through black and red volcanic landscape to the gondola base is spectacular in itself. The cafe at the top serves great coffee and excellent fries.
For Indian families: NZD 157 for family of 4 (approx INR 8,635). Highly recommended even outside ski season.
21. Turoa Ski Field Drive (FREE)
The drive up to Turoa Ski Field on the southern slopes of Ruapehu is worth doing on any clear day — completely free, snow-covered mountain, gorgeous forest road, and on a clear day you can see Mount Taranaki in the distance — two volcanoes at once. Allow 1 to 2 hours. One of the best free scenic drives on the North Island road trip.
22. Mangawhero Falls — LOTR Location (FREE)
A short stop — allow 15 to 30 minutes — but absolutely worth it. The walk to the waterfall viewpoint through native forest feels like an enchanted forest. Lord of the Rings fans will recognise it as a filming location. Very easy walk, great for young kids.
23. Ohakune Carrot Adventure Park (FREE)
An absolute highlight with kids — and completely free. Ohakune is the carrot capital of New Zealand and the giant carrot statue is a compulsory photo stop. The Carrot Adventure Park is wonderful for kids to run around. We visited twice during our stay and our girls declared it their Ohakune headquarters. One of the best free things to do in Ohakune with young kids.
24. Nevalea Alpacas, near Taumarunui (Paid — NZD 120 / approx INR 6,600 for family of 4)
About an hour's drive from Ohakune near Taumarunui, Nevalea Alpacas was one of the most unexpected highlights of our entire North Island road trip. The drive through this region — beautiful rolling farmland, autumn foliage, volcanic peaks in the distance — is itself gorgeous. The Taumarunui area is also the gateway to the Forgotten World Highway, a stunning scenic drive worth doing if you have time and good weather. The alpaca experience is genuinely wonderful for families. Book in advance.
For Indian families: NZD 120 for a family of 4 (approx INR 6,600).

Best Things to Do in New Plymouth & Taranaki with Kids
The Taranaki region is one of the most underrated family destinations on the North Island of New Zealand. Mount Taranaki — one of the world's most perfectly conical volcanoes — dominates the landscape and most of the best things to do in New Plymouth and Taranaki with kids are completely free. This was one of our favourite regions of the entire North Island self-drive trip.
25. Manganui Gorge Walk, Stratford Mountain Car Park, Mount Taranaki (FREE)
Drive to the Stratford Mountain car park and do the Manganui Gorge Walk — a short but stunning walk with extraordinary views of Mount Taranaki throughout, culminating in a suspension bridge over the gorge that kids absolutely love. No strollers — proper footwear needed. Allow 1 to 2 hours. The view of Mount Taranaki from the car park itself is extraordinary. One of the best free things to do in Taranaki with kids.
Important safety note: Mount Taranaki weather changes extremely fast. Even on a clear morning, always bring layers and waterproofs for mountain walks.

26. Lake Mangamahoe, New Plymouth — Most Beautiful Viewpoint in Taranaki (FREE)
One of the most beautiful stops on the entire North Island trip — and completely free. The autumn colours around the lake combined with the view of Mount Taranaki - is one of the most photographed viewpoints in New Zealand, and rightly so. Great for walks, picnics and simply staring in disbelief at how beautiful it is. Do not skip this if you are in New Plymouth. One of the best free things to do in North Island New Zealand.

27. Pukekura Park & Brooklands Zoo, New Plymouth (FREE)
Pukekura Park is one of New Zealand's most beautiful public parks — free to enter, with a gorgeous lake, ancient trees and wonderful walking paths. Brooklands Zoo adjacent to it is also free, with native New Zealand birds and animals and an excellent playground. You could spend 2 to 3 happy hours here without spending a single rupee. The zoo is modest but lovely — if your family has done a lot of farm and animal experiences on the trip you can skip the zoo, but Pukekura Park itself is unmissable.

28. Puke Ariki Museum, New Plymouth (FREE · Parking approx NZD 5/hour / INR 275)
A genuinely impressive free museum covering Maori culture, the volcanic ecosystem of Taranaki, the history of early settlers and the natural history of the region. Well designed and engaging for kids. Allow 1 to 2 hours. One of the best free indoor activities in New Plymouth — especially useful on an uncertain weather morning.
29. Te Rewa Rewa Bridge & Coastal Walkway, New Plymouth (FREE)
The Te Rewa Rewa Bridge is one of New Plymouth's most iconic landmarks — a beautiful arch bridge with Mount Taranaki perfectly framed through it on a clear day. The New Plymouth Coastal Walkway extends along the coast and is a lovely free walk with great views. Easy and relaxed with kids.
30. Three Sisters & Elephant Rock, Taranaki Coast (FREE)
A dramatic coastal rock formation on the Taranaki black sand coast with Mount Taranaki visible in the distance. Timing tip: If you cannot visit at low tide when you can walk down to the beach, drive to the viewpoint at the end of Pilot Road — you get a spectacular elevated view of the rock formation even at high tide. This is where our North island itinerary blog photo was taken.
31. Whatawhata Berry Farm & Seasonal Berry Farms (Paid — varies by farm)
The Hamilton and Taranaki regions are known for seasonal berry farms. When we visited in early May, most had closed for the season but Whatawhata Berry Farm near Hamilton (on the drive towards Northland) still had pick-your-own strawberries. There is a small playground and the fresh berry ice cream is excellent. Berry season typically runs November to April — check ahead before visiting. A spontaneous, joyful family stop that our kids absolutely loved.
For Indian families: completely vegetarian-friendly stop — fresh fruit, ice cream and outdoor fun.

Best Things to Do in Whangarei with Kids
Whangarei and the Northland region is the most underrated destination on the North Island New Zealand family road trip. Most itineraries skip it entirely — which means you get beautiful beaches, stunning coastal drives and genuine local atmosphere without the tourist crowds. Here are the best things to do in Whangarei with kids:
32. Smugglers Cove & Ocean Beach, Whangarei Heads (FREE)
Park at the Urqhart car park and follow the short track up to the hillock — the view of Smugglers Cove from the top is stunning before you even reach the beach. A beautiful, uncrowded cove with lovely coastal farmland walks. From there, Ocean Beach is expansive, wild and gorgeous. Great for a full afternoon of walking and beach time with no tourist crowds whatsoever. One of the best free things to do in Whangarei with kids.

33. Whangarei Falls (FREE)
A beautiful 26-metre waterfall that is free, easy to access and genuinely impressive — one of the best free things to do in North Island New Zealand with young kids. The short walk to the falls is not stroller-friendly but is easy for kids who can walk. Allow 1 to 2 hours. A satisfying stop that takes little time and costs nothing.
34. Tutukaka Coast — Matapouri Beach, Tiger Hill Drive & Whale Bay (FREE)
The Tutukaka Coast drive is the most beautiful coastal drive on the entire North Island road trip. The drive via Tiger Hill to Matapouri Bay has sweeping views .
Matapouri Beach — turquoise water, white sand, short walk from the car park. We visited in late April and had the beach almost entirely to ourselves. One honest note: we spotted Portuguese Man o' War on the beach — which we found out can happen after storms in this area. The kids were fascinated but we kept them well away. Worth being aware of after rough weather.
Whale Bay — a hidden gem tucked at the end of a short walk. Small, intimate and absolutely beautiful. Together these beaches make the Tutukaka Coast one of the best free family activities in Whangarei and one of the highlights of our entire North Island road trip.
35. Mount Manaia Summit, Whangarei (FREE — check current access before visiting)
Initially on our North Island itinerary, Mount Manaia was closed when we visited due to damage from Cyclone Waiau in late March 2026. A popular hike with spectacular views over the Whangarei Heads coastline — check current track conditions at doc.govt.nz before planning your visit.
36. Poor Knights Islands — Glass Bottom Boat or Snorkel Tour (Paid — check divenz.com)
Poor Knights Islands off the Tutukaka Coast is rated one of the top dive sites in the world. Glass-bottom boat tours are available for non-divers and snorkelling is accessible for families. We did not do this on our trip but it is high on our list for next time. Book in advance through Dive! Tutukaka.
Best Things to Do Near Auckland Airport with Kids
If you have a few hours before your flight home — or on a last driving day back to Auckland — these two stops near the airport are excellent and both completely manageable within 10 to 20 minutes of the terminal.
37. Kiwi Valley Farm Park, Auckland (Paid — NZD 59 / approx INR 3,245 for family of 4)
About 20 minutes from Auckland Airport and one of the best paid family activities near Auckland for kids. The farm lets you hold and pet rabbits, guinea pigs and rats on your lap — which sounds unusual but is genuinely delightful. Short farm tractor rides and pony rides are included in the entry price. The Pukeko Cafe on site is excellent for a last New Zealand lunch. Highly recommended for families on their last day.
38. Ambury Regional Farm Park, Auckland (FREE)
Just 10 to 15 minutes from Auckland Airport, Ambury Regional Farm Park is a lovely free nature reserve where sheep, cattle and birds roam freely across green fields. Walk among the animals and continue to the coast for beautiful views over the Harbour. Free, relaxed and a wonderful way to spend your last hour of New Zealand fresh air before heading to the terminal. One of the best free things to do near Auckland Airport with kids.

Conclusion
The North Island of New Zealand offers some of the best family travel experiences in the world — and what makes it extraordinary for families travelling from India is that so many of the best things to do in North Island New Zealand with kids are completely free. Huka Falls, Kuirau Park, the Taranaki Falls walk, Lake Mangamahoe, the Tutukaka Coast beaches, Ohakune Carrot Park — all free, all unforgettable.
